">Hello everyone, it's Rob from nin.com. With everything that's been going on, the process of upgrading the official site has taken far longer than we'd hoped, but the good news is our developers are about ready to launch a public beta of the first wave of new features for nin.com. Since we're launching a new public community, I wanted to get the information out to this forum in addition to The Spiral. I'll be posting the URLs for the public beta in this thread as soon as they're ready. In the meantime, here's a brief introduction to what's going to be happening with the site:

What you'll have access to shortly are the first pieces of a very ambitious vision of nin.com that is going to take a while to come together, but will ultimately be incredibly cool. Here's some info:

PROFILES: Your new nin.com profile is a customizable page with a modular design, allowing us to easily add new profile features as nin.com grows. Aside from the usual editable information and photo, your profile can currently display remixes you've contributed and rated at remix.nin.com, and will eventually display photos, videos, blog posts, which shows you've attended or plan to attend, and a lot more.

FORUMS: We're starting a brand new forum from scratch - a public forum, unlike the private Spiral boards. It ties in seamlessly with your profiles and the rest of nin.com, unlike the clunky double-login at The Spiral. We've stripped the forum of almost everything except basic functionality, so it's a nice clean environment for discussion - I'm sure we'll eventually add some more bells and whistles as the community grows, but for now we're going to keep it simple and see how it goes.

CHAT: Our developers have set up an IRC server that can be accessed through any IRC client of your choice, or through a great Flash frontend that displays profiles and avatars from nin.com. The server is locked to nin.com's user database, assuring a unified community with the rest of the site, and also assuring that if a band member decides to drop in there, you'll know it's them.

This is all just the beginning. The next phase of the site is an expanded tour database which will allow you to post photos and videos for specific shows, past and present, which can be tagged and rated by the community. You'll be able to see which other users attended past shows, or are planning to attend future shows. Eventually everything around the site will begin to be united with tags and wiki entries, using a non-linear database that lets you have an experience like this one: You click on a past tour date. Amidst photos, videos, and reviews for that show, you also see a set list and other wiki information. You click on Terrible Lie in the set list. You then see wiki information for Terrible Lie, including lyrics and release notes, and you can also see every show that Terrible Lie was ever performed at, and every video of Terrible Lie live that's been contributed to the site. From there you could browse every forum post that mentioned Terrible Lie, or see all the remixes of Terrible Lie from the remix site. That's just an example, and it's a long way off, but you get the idea.

All of this is going to be achieved through aggregation of data from pre-existing services, like Flickr and YouTube. When we launch the photo section, you'll associate your nin.com account with your Flickr account (we'll probably have support for other photo services, as well). Then, if you took photos at a specific show, check that show's unique ID on nin.com and tag all your Flickr photos with that unique ID. Those photos will then show up in nin.com's tour database, posted by your nin.com username. Although hosted by Flickr, the photos will be displayed in nin.com's shell, and will be separately rated, tagged, and commented by the nin.com community. Videos and blog entries will work more or less the same way. This allows us work seamlessly with popular services you probably already use, and to display an unlimited amount of content on nin.com without the nightmare of huge bandwidth costs or developing proprietary technologies. In the end, we're envisioning the ultimate resource for Nine Inch Nails media and information on the internet - most of it created, organized, and rated by the fan community. This is of course a monumental task for our small team of developers, so you're going to see the site develop bit by bit over time - but each upgrade will bring a host of new features to play with.

One more thing: We need some new moderators for both chat and the forums. If you're interested, send me a PM with some information about yourself, your nin.com username, and whether you're interested in forums or chat. If there is someone you think would make a great moderator, nominate them by PMing me their username on this board, and why you think they'd be great. We're looking for responsible, mature, fair individuals who want to help keep the new community organized, peaceful, and running smoothly.

Watch this thread for the link to the beta forums once they're open! Also, please keep this information contained within this community and The Spiral for now - as in, don't quote this on your blogs or other sites. We want to keep the beta launch at least somewhat contained until we get all the bugs worked out. Thanks!

I'd like to thank all of you who attended the first leg of the Lights In The Sky tour. If you missed it, check the schedule - we'll be playing through the rest of this year. If you've seen it, come back - we'll have some new tricks up our sleeve on this next leg. We're very proud of this show and it's been exciting (and quite the challenge) for us to present it to you.

Oh, and it was quite a surprise to get back home, turn on the television and discover we've apparently won the war in Iraq! Yeah, some woman from Alaska said so - apparently that troop surge was all we needed! That's good news, because I was starting to think all the shame and embarrassment I've felt as an American citizen traveling abroad the last few years wasn't going to pay off in the end. Now I can rest easy knowing we've successfully spread FREEDOM - AND we've stopped evildoers in their tracks.

US citizens: Nobody wants anyone preaching their opinions at them - particularly a musician - but PLEASE get involved and pay attention to what's happening during this election and try to see through the clutter to the substance of what is or isn't being said.
Wouldn't it be great to feel proud of this country for a change? Seems like it's within reach.

Rob will now explain what we've done:

Nin.com's new image and video galleries aggregate media from Flickr and YouTube, allowing nin.com users to share their NIN photos, videos, artwork, and other content, which can then be organized, rated, and discussed by other fans. Your nin.com profile can now display your image and video contributions, as well.

You can browse individual galleries from every show of the 2008 tour, and soon we'll be adding past tours as well. The goal is to have the ultimate database of NIN images and videos right here on nin.com, created and organized by the fan community.

The galleries are still in beta, but we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to start using them while we continue to enhance functionality, work out bugs, and add new features. Expect support for favorites, descriptions, comment ratings, view counts, personal galleries, feeds, and more in the coming weeks. Please read the FAQ for gallery rules and guidelines, as well as instructions for adding your media to the site.

File this one under lost opportunities.

I'm very proud of the show we've put together for this tour and have been working hard the last few months to find a way to capture it. I had an amazing situation lined up that would have allowed me to film the show in 3D with James Cameron's team for a theatrical release as well as DVD / BluRay, etc. We had an extra date added to the tour that we were going to give away all the tickets for and have a filming party / thank you show.

I made two critical mistakes. One was to approach a certain record company that owns some of the song rights about producing / funding. The second was to allow said company to fuck around as usual for months before saying um... no. We then achieved the impossible by finding alternate production / funding but the timetable is too rushed to get it filmed comfortably with the remaining time left on the tour. This tour and a lot of the personnel involved finish at the end of this leg, so we can't push filming into Jan / Feb.

Deep breath...
This was an amazing tour and production - certainly the best thing I've ever been involved with and likely the final tour for NIN on this scale. Thank you to those who came out to see it and forgive me for having a Kanye West moment, but this was FOR SURE the best show of the year and any bullshit end-of-the-year poll you may read in the next few weeks that says otherwise simply has it wrong. Those of you who saw it know I'm right.

The shows we have announced in 2009 and any more that may be announced will be a completely different approach with some different personnel and will likely be the last for the foreseeable future.

Niektóre rzeczy może być ciężko przewieźć, ale jeżeli dobrze kojarzę to do Japonii dało radę. W Europie nie gra się przecież dwóch koncertów, wszystko blisko siebie, odległości o wiele mniejsze niż za oceanem, więc naprawdę ciężko mi zrozumieć taką politykę.

Here are my thoughts on ticket scalping / re-sellers.

As we approach on-sale dates for the upcoming tour, I've noticed lots of you are curious / concerned / outraged at the plethora of tickets that somehow appear on all these reseller sites at inflated prices - even before the pre-sale dates. I'll do my best to explain the situation as I see it, as well as clarify my organization's stance in the matter.

NIN decides to tour this summer. We arrive at the conclusion outdoor amphitheaters are the right venue for this outing, for a variety of reasons we've throughly considered*. In the past, NIN would sell the shows in each market to local promoters, who then "buy" the show from us to sell to you. Live Nation happens to own all the amphitheaters and bought most of the local promoters - so if you want to play those venues, you're being promoted by Live Nation. Live Nation has had an exclusive deal with TicketMaster that has just expired, so Live Nation launched their own ticketing service. Most of the dates on this tour are through Live Nation, some are through TicketMaster - this is determined by the promoter (Live Nation), not us.
Now we get into the issue of secondary markets for tickets, which is the hot issue here. The ticketing marketplace for rock concerts shows a real lack of sophistication, meaning this: the true market value of some tickets for some concerts is much higher than what the act wants to be perceived as charging. For example, there are some people who would be willing to pay $1,000 and up to be in the best seats for various shows, but MOST acts in the rock / pop world don't want to come off as greedy pricks asking that much, even though the market says its value is that high. The acts know this, the venue knows this, the promoters know this, the ticketing company knows this and the scalpers really know this. So...

The venue, the promoter, the ticketing agency and often the artist camp (artist, management and agent) take tickets from the pool of available seats and feed them directly to the re-seller (which from this point on will be referred to by their true name: SCALPER). I am not saying every one of the above entities all do this, nor am I saying they do it for all shows but this is a very common practice that happens more often than not. There is money to be made and they feel they should participate in it. There are a number of scams they employ to pull this off which is beyond the scope of this note.

StubHub.com is an example of a re-seller / scalper. So is TicketsNow.com.

Here's the rub: TicketMaster has essentially been a monopoly for many years - certainly up until Live Nation's exclusive deal ran out. They could have (and can right now) stop the secondary market dead in its tracks by doing the following: limit the amount of sales per customer, print names on the tickets and require ID / ticket matches at the venue. We know this works because we do it for our pre-sales. Why don't THEY do it? It's obvious - they make a lot of money fueling the secondary market. TicketMaster even bought a re-seller site and often bounces you over to that site to buy tickets (TicketsNow.com)!

NIN gets 10% of the available seats for our own pre-sale. We won a tough (and I mean TOUGH) battle to get the best seats. We require you to sign up at our site (for free) to get tickets. We limit the amount you can buy, we print your name on the tickets and we have our own person let you in a separate entrance where we check your ID to match the ticket. We charge you a surcharge that has been less than TicketMaster's or Live Nation's in all cases so far to pay for the costs of doing this - it's not a profit center for us. We have essentially stopped scalping by doing these things - because we want true fans to be able to get great seats and not get ripped off by these parasites.

I assure you nobody in the NIN camp supplies or supports the practice of supplying tickets to these re-sellers because it's not something we morally feel is the right thing to do. We are leaving money on the table here but it's not always about money.
Being completely honest, it IS something I've had to consider. If people are willing to pay a lot of money to sit up front AND ARE GOING TO ANYWAY thanks to the rigged system, why let that money go into the hands of the scalpers? I'm the one busting my ass up there every night. The conclusion really came down to it not feeling like the right thing to do - simple as that.

My guess as to what will eventually happen if / when Live Nation and TicketMaster merges is that they'll move to an auction or market-based pricing scheme - which will simply mean it will cost a lot more to get a good seat for a hot show. They will simply BECOME the scalper, eliminating them from the mix.

Nothing's going to change until the ticketing entity gets serious about stopping the problem - which of course they don't see as a problem. The ultimate way to hurt scalpers is to not support them. Leave them holding the merchandise. If this subject interests you, check out the following links. Before long, you will start to see some limited advertisements on nin.com in the forums area. This is an experiment to help sustain the development of nin.com technologies into the indefinite future. I know ads suck, but after much debate and thinking it through we're willing to see how it goes and how intrusive it is to the nin.com experience.
My mission is to continue developing nin.com and related mobile apps way past the point we are now and the reality of that is it costs money. Currently we're spending 10-20K* / month on bandwidth / R&D outside of any specialized projects (mobile apps) and the possibility exists for the site to become self-sustaining through this process. Which means: more social / media integration and overall cool stuff for you for free moving into the future, for the price of seeing some ads. The untimely passing of their beautiful six year-old son, Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz.

Pablo passed away yesterday, after a very courageous battle with cancer over the past thirteen months. Pablo left this life peacefully, at home, in the loving arms of his parents and his brother Grady.

Getting right to the point, we're going to play a handful of shows in NYC, Chicago and LA starting August 22nd. They will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set-lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises. Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight - it just didn't feel right to end NIN that way. An offer to headline V-Fest in Toronto (being announced soon) set the idea in motion to play some FUN shows to end this up with. If we can get it together we'll film these shows, too.

In NYC we'll be playing Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and Terminal 5. In Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom. In LA we'll be at The Wiltern, The Henry Fonda, The Palladium and The Echoplex. These should be cool, unusual and unique shows and I hope you come out - this is it.

So far, The Horrors will be joining us for some shows in NYC, Mew will be with us at other shows in NYC, Chicago and LA, and perhaps more.
Details and ticket info will be announced shortly, so check back.

During the 2008 Lights In The Sky tour we began an open camera policy for stills and video during all NIN shows, inviting fans to capture the events with anything from a cell phone to a hi-def video camera. The results have been overwhelming, filling our own galleries with thousands of images and videos from every show, and inspiring a number of ambitious fansourced video projects within the NIN community. Some of those projects are starting to surface now, and we couldn't be happier with the way the fans have organized themselves and created some truly impressive work.

On the recent Wave Goodbye tour, we were unable to professionally film the band's performance of The Downward Spiral at Webster Hall, due to exorbitant fees requested by the LiveNation venue. Our open camera policy, however, remained in tact, and as soon as the show ended fans took matters into their own hands, organizing online to track down everyone who had filmed HD footage of the show. Now, only two months later, the group has released a polished, edited, downloadable DVD of the full Downward Spiral performance from Webster Hall. The entire thing has been recorded, edited, and distributed entirely by fans, and it's the latest example of the amazing things fans will do when their creativity isn't limited by outdated, misguided restrictions.

You can watch "The Downward Spiral: Live" in HD on this YouTube playlist. You can download it via torrent as a burnable DVD or an iPod/iPhone-friendly video from this page (click the question mark link on that page if you're new to downloading with torrents).

We filmed all of the other final Wave Goodbye shows professionally, and you can expect to see that footage surface in some form or another in the future. Our 2008 Lights In The Sky tour was an ambitious multimedia production on a scale well beyond anything we'd ever attempted before. Everyone involved was extremely proud of how it came together, and we were devastated when, for a variety of reasons, we were unable to capture it professionally for a theatrical or commercial release. As a "plan B" of sorts, early last year we released a massive 405gb free download of raw HD footage captured at three different shows during the tour. The idea was to get the footage out in the wild and see what our notoriously enterprising fans could do with it. There were no rules. No strings attached. This was a gift, and an experiment, and for the past year we've watched it come to life in more ways than we could have ever imagined.

Fans have edited thousands of videos from the footage, assembled their own DVDs and live albums, even held theatrical screenings of their creations. And now, the ambitious and well-organized group known as This One Is On Us have released their massive, highly-anticipated creation, Another Version of the Truth: The Gift.

For 12 months, a core team of dozens of fans and a network of thousands spanning the entire globe pooled their efforts to create this professional-quality 1080p 5.1 concert film, and have released it in every format from Blu-ray and DVD to iPod and YouTube. It combines footage from all three shows and includes DVD menus, bonus footage, a PDF booklet, and more. That something of this scale was produced entirely by fans, on their own time, purely for the sake of giving something back to the community, is absolutely unprecedented. This is yet another example of a devoted fanbase and a policy of openness combining to fill in blanks left by old media barriers. The entire NIN camp is absolutely thrilled that treating our fans with respect and nurturing their creativity has led to such an overwhelming outpour of incredible content, and that we now have such a high quality souvenir from our most ambitious tour ever. Or, as Trent simply put it, "Nine Inch Nails fans kick ass."
